Storm damage guide

What to do after a hail or wind storm

Storm damage isn’t always visible from the ground. Hail can bruise shingles and knock off granules without leaving obvious holes, and a roof that looks fine today can start leaking months later. A free inspection tells you where you stand.

Signs of storm damage

  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents or siding. If soft metal around the house is dented, the shingles likely took hits too.
  • Missing or lifted shingles after high winds. Shingles in the yard are an obvious clue; lifted ones are harder to spot from the ground.
  • Fresh piles of granules at the downspouts. Hail knocks granules loose, and they wash down after the storm.
  • Dark, bruised or cracked spots on shingles. Hail impacts can crack the mat underneath even when the surface looks intact.
  • New leaks or ceiling stains. Water inside after a storm is a sign something on the roof was opened up.
  • Damaged window screens, trim or outdoor equipment. Damage elsewhere on the property is a good reason to have the roof checked.

What to do next

  • Stay off the roof. Wet or damaged roofs are dangerous. Let a professional do the inspection.
  • Photograph what you can see from the ground. Dated photos of damage to gutters, siding and the yard can help later.
  • Protect the inside of your home. Catch dripping water and move belongings away from any leaks.
  • Check your policy’s filing deadline. Many homeowners policies set a time limit for reporting storm damage.
  • Get a free inspection first. Find out whether there’s real damage before you decide whether to file a claim.
  • Be wary of storm chasers. Out-of-town crews often knock on doors after big storms. Choose a local contractor who’ll be here after the job.

Storm damage questions, answered

Does hail damage always cause a leak right away?

No. Hail often cracks or bruises shingles without making a hole. The damage can let water in slowly over the following months, which is why an inspection soon after the storm matters.

Will my homeowners insurance cover storm damage?

Many policies cover sudden damage from hail and wind, subject to your deductible and the terms of your policy. Coverage varies, so check your policy or ask your agent.

How soon after a storm should I get an inspection?

As soon as you reasonably can. Early inspections catch damage before it spreads, and they keep you within your policy’s reporting window.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes. The storm damage inspection is free and there’s no obligation to hire us.

What if the inspection finds no damage?

Then you’ll know your roof came through fine, and there’s nothing to pay. If we find wear unrelated to the storm, we’ll let you know whether a roof repair makes sense.

Did the storm damage my gutters or siding too?

Hail and wind often hit gutters and siding as well. Ask us to look at them during the inspection, or get a price for new seamless gutters or siding.

“Throughout this process I’ve dealt with Sam, Nick and Ryan. All very pleasant and knowledgeable. I had roof and gutters replaced. Project start date was only one day later than originally scheduled but it was due to the storms and tornado in Menasha. Work was completed in a day and a half and the finished project looks amazing. The yard was cleaned up and I’m very happy I chose Wisconsin Exteriors.”

“Would highly recommend Wisconsin Exteriors for any of your roofing needs. We had our roof replaced and new gutter screens installed, hard working crews that knew what they were doing and got the job done promptly. Also did a great job with the cleanup afterwards and put things back where they belonged. Sam & Nick were great to work and chat with also.”
