Roof repair guide

Repair it now, or pay more later

Most roof leaks start small. A few missing shingles or a cracked boot around a vent pipe can often be fixed in an afternoon. Left alone through a Wisconsin winter, the same spot can soak the decking, insulation and drywall underneath.

Signs your roof needs repair

  • Water stains on ceilings or in the attic. Brown rings or damp insulation usually mean water is already getting past the shingles.
  • Missing, cracked or curling shingles. Wind lifts and tears shingles, and once one is gone the ones around it go faster.
  • Granules in your gutters. Shingles shed their protective granules as they age or after hail. A heavy buildup means they’re wearing thin.
  • Leaks around chimneys, vents and skylights. Flashing and pipe boots are the most common leak points on any roof.
  • Ice dams along the eaves. Ice at the roof edge forces meltwater under the shingles and often points to a ventilation or insulation problem.
  • Soft or sagging spots. A roof deck that dips between rafters needs attention before the damage spreads.

What affects your repair price

  • Size and location of the damage. A handful of shingles is a different job from a large section or a valley.
  • Roof pitch and height. Steep or tall roofs take more safety setup and time.
  • What’s underneath. Whether decking, flashing or underlayment has to be replaced along with the shingles.
  • Matching materials. Finding shingles that blend with an older, weathered roof.
  • Whether repair still makes sense. If damage is widespread or the roof is near the end of its life, a repair may not be worth the money — and we’ll tell you so.

Roof repair questions, answered

Can my roof be repaired, or do I need a new one?

It depends on how widespread the damage is and how old the roof is. Isolated damage on a roof with plenty of life left is usually a good candidate for repair. If problems are showing up across the whole roof, a roof replacement may cost less over time. A free inspection answers the question for your roof.

Can a roof be repaired in winter?

Many repairs can be done in cold weather, especially fixes that stop an active leak. Some shingle work is best finished when it’s warm enough for the shingles to seal, so timing can depend on the repair.

Will the repaired area match the rest of my roof?

We match shingle style and color as closely as possible. On older roofs, years of weathering can make an exact match difficult, so we’ll show you what to expect before work starts.

My roof is leaking right now. What should I do?

Move belongings away from the leak, catch the dripping water, and if it’s safe, look in the attic to see where water is coming in. Don’t climb onto a wet or icy roof. Then call us — we offer emergency service.

Was the damage caused by a storm?

If the problem showed up after hail or high winds, start with a free storm damage inspection. Storm damage may be covered by your homeowners insurance.

“Throughout this process I’ve dealt with Sam, Nick and Ryan. All very pleasant and knowledgeable. I had roof and gutters replaced. Project start date was only one day later than originally scheduled but it was due to the storms and tornado in Menasha. Work was completed in a day and a half and the finished project looks amazing. The yard was cleaned up and I’m very happy I chose Wisconsin Exteriors.”

“Would highly recommend Wisconsin Exteriors for any of your roofing needs. We had our roof replaced and new gutter screens installed, hard working crews that knew what they were doing and got the job done promptly. Also did a great job with the cleanup afterwards and put things back where they belonged. Sam & Nick were great to work and chat with also.”
